HIRING: Garden Manager at By Faith Farm

By Faith Farm is a 97 acre farm in Joelton, TN focused on providing nutritionally dense food to the Second Harvest food bank. The farm is also host to a variety of agritourism operations, including a farm stay apartment, event space in a beautiful barn, and a u-pick flower farm which all help to sustain the mission of increasing access to fresh produce to those in need in Middle Tennessee. The 2020 donation garden is made up of 1 acre of corn and watermelon and a second garden that is approximately a half acre of you-pick flowers and mixed vegetables.
This position is part-time, 15-20 hours a week. The bulk of this work is during the March-October time frame, but there will be year round opportunities for work. The applicant must be able to work independently, but will frequently be working with the Second Harvest volunteer coordinator and a group of volunteers to accomplish tasks. The applicant must have strong communication skills. Experience working with volunteers, working closely with private landholders, or working on agritourism operations are all bonuses that will contribute highly to a strong application.

Duties:
Oversee planning, field preparation, planting, and harvest of donation garden
Coordinate with farm owner and Second Harvest volunteer coordinator
Provide a weekly list of tasks that need attention to farm owner and coordinator
Train with flower consultant to oversee you-pick flower garden in future seasons
Coordinate with soil health consultant to implement fertility programs (compost tea and biodynamic prep applications, annual manure compost application, cover crop rotations)
Assist in long-term beautification projects around agri-tourism sites on the farm.
Part of the hours will be in farm maintenance such as mowing, weed-eating, and general property management tasks (about 9 hours a week)

Requirements:
At least one season in a management position or multiple seasons as a field worker on a commercial vegetable farm. Significant experience in subsistence farming/home gardening setting may be considered on a case by case basis.
Ability to bend, kneel, squat, stand
Ability to lift up to 50lbs repeatedly
Open, honest communication
Love of the land
Strong ethical compass

Compensation:
$15-20/hour, depending on experience
Access to fresh produce
Access to on farm recreation including hiking, fishing, ponds, and waterfall
Upon successful completion of trial period and further discussion with farm owners there is opportunity to rent a single occupancy, non-smoking apartment on the farm.
